The impressive Borough Market which dominates the Halifax town centre was erected between 1891 and1896.

The exquisite Victorian Architecture which envelops the building gives the market a striking appearance and was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary).

 
In its entirety the Halifax Borough Market is probably one of the finest Victorian buildings in the whole of Britain, and remains to a considerable extent in its original state.  Due to this fact it is becoming increasingly regarded as building of great architectural and historical interest: hence its Grade II listing.
 
Today the Market throngs with the hustle and bustle of commercial retail activity. This is tempered by its warm and friendly market atmosphere.
