Markets and Education

The Markets Section is responsible for the provision and operation of Six public markets, two farmers markets and one Car Boot Sale which operate in the Borough.

There are numerous opportunities for schools to become involved with the vitality, culture and heritage which the markets offer. You can create school projects of a depth to suit your pupils from primary to secondary level, around the whole markets experience.

The markets at Halifax, have a strategic importance both locally and regionally, whereas Todmorden, Sowerby Bridge, Elland and Hebden Bridge markets can allow students to gain greater understanding of part of the life of their community.

Halifax Borough Market is the largest traditional indoor market in the Borough and dates back to 1896, with the widest range of goods and commodities. It is the main feature of the town centre and attracts thousands of visitors each week from far and wide.

Close to schools sited in the Calder Valley area of the Borough, Todmorden Market Hall is held six days per week with half day closing Tuesday, Todmorden Open Market is held every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, whilst Hebden Bridge open market is held every Wednesday and Thursday along with a Local produce market held on the first Sunday of each month.

Elland Open Market is Held every Friday and its origins are derived from an ancient Royal Charter.  Sowerby Bridge Open Market is held every Tuesday and Friday, with a Second hand market on Saturday. Why not combine a visit here with one of the other attractions nearby?

Free Stalls to Schools

Free use of a stall on any of our open markets, for students involved in Business Development projects. Let them have their “own” stall, for a taste of life in a busy competitive environment.

Free use of a stall on any of our Open Markets for Education purposes.  this includes: Promotion for Adult Learning, Literacy Classes and Parent Teacher fund raising events etc.

Why not bring classes to any of the Second Hand, Antique and Bric-a-Brac Markets to see the everyday goods which their parents used – all those years ago. Many items are now collectable!.

We are justifiably proud of our renovated grade II listed Borough Market, and can arrange a talk in your school –on the significance of the site, its history, management of the building and the process of building refurbishment.
